Australian Artist of May 2021

Creating a 'Sense of Place'

Robert Juniper established a reputation for landscape, particularly desert, painting that used surface & colour in a vivacious way. His own 'sense of space' goes beyond the landscape into the figurative to make the landscape human.

'The River Dies in January' 1977
Robert Juniper's landscapes have a relationship to those of
John Olsen (recent news post) & Fred Williams ( next news post )

                                         Robert Juniper VIDEO link

All three painters play with the lateralness of the picture plane
and the illusionistic space that lies behind it
Juniper uses marks and materials scattered across the surface ( see video)
Both abstract and naturalistic forms create a sense of place

My experiments with inks & oil sticks on Kitakata paper reflect
colours used in some of Juniper's paintings

Often my paintings becomes the land & sea while I am the sky
This ink on rice paper is reflecting the warm sunny climate of
Far North Queensland and is only the beginning of what is to come

I too am discovering my sense of place

Abstract Australian Artist

Australian artist this month is John olsen

who has been one of the biggest inspirations for my art Journey

quote "to be an Australian artist is to be an adventurer"

HE IS SAID TO BE AUSTRALIA'S  GREATEST LIVING PAINTER

John Olsen keeps an open eyed innocence of a child

A tribute to John Olsen here

A journey into You Beaut country series is a landscape of the mind
One of my favourite works here "Where the bee sucks, there suck I" that he borrowed from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'

It reflects on the country life in Clarendon, South Australia linking the land, light, people and attitudes of Australians.

A big attraction for me is John's use of strong colours that creates a joyful sense of place while his curvilinear style makes us feel so alive.

This flowing energy is essential to maintain my belief that "art is the process"

My 'Dragon' Encaustic Wax painting is a typical example of John's influence

Sometimes i find my family of people while painting or printing.

This can be described as 'BIOMORPHIC' meaning 'life & transformation'
These forms can be described as organic and abstract shapes derived from biology or living organisms

An all time favourite Australian artist of mine is Andrew Sibley. This work of his is an  example of how he uses discoveries on the surface during his printing process to develop into his painting compositions by eliminating what is not needed to reveal his subjects.

'Salt of the Earth' is an early Encaustic-Wax painting of mine.
It reveals an unplanned weathered figure as part of the landscape. It went through a process of many layers, changes and many hours of work before i decided it reached the final outcome i was happy with.

My next post will show you more examples to hopefully inspire you to

CREATIVITY REDUCES ANXIETY FROM CORONA VIRUS

Art makes my heart sing
Please share your art & comments

I felt compelled to write about the IMPORTANCE  OF  CREATIVITY  after feeling helpless when told "I'm just a visual artist & cannot help dealing with worklife changes due to Corona Virus"

ART  &  CREATIVITY  STILL  MATTER

ARTISTS
  • give us the possibity to imagine a future beyond these dark times
  • give us inspiration with so many ideas
  • give ways of looking at the world & things differently
  • help us better deal with uncertainity
  • adapt their thinking to allow for the flow of the unknown

CREATIVITY

  • gives value to humans & is a practical process using your imagination
  • creates new ideas, possibitiities, is flexible & lively
  • works when there is curiousity, passion, knowledge & dedication
  • helps to solve problems, generate more ideas & concepts
  • gives confidence to your potential to make a positve difference
  • decreases negative emotions & improves medical outcomes
  • reduces stress & anxiety

Please enjoy my little artworks using various Encaustic- Wax techniques during my self isolation days
